It was interesting but it was more of a diary than a book. Not much to write in a diary when you cross the plains in a covered wagon. Each day is the same as the other. But, it held my attention to finish reading it.Product details

California A Trip Across the Plains in the Spring of 1850 eBook James Abbey Reviews
These are daily diary entries. Abbey doesn't really write narrative. However, the information given is interesting. This book gives a fairly good picture of the hardships of crossing the plains and mountains of America in 1850.
Always wondered what it was like in those wagon trains with oxen. And all the questions I have had were answered like how far did they travel in a day ? . And Snakes also felt like have better understanding of the very real dangers they faced, Indians bad water , no water or no grass for animals.
Bought this for research and found it immensely helpful. Abbey kept a good diary that gives vivid accounts of a relatively uneventful overland journey. If you want to understand day-by-day what the overland journey in the 1850s was like, this is a superb place to start. His details are a researcher's dream - even down to the cost of bacon.
Another great read! This is not really a story but a lot of great information about the Westward movement. A lot of good information!
Young men set off by ox team to join the gold rush. Through difficulties over three months they arrive in California. Enthusiasm soon gives place to reality, as they work for a pittance of gold each day. The book ends at the point of unsatisfied curiosity. Did the young narrator find success or return home? It is,however, a valuable journal that recounts the 1850's gold rush.
A really interesting, true account of a trip taken in 1850 on the way to the California gold country. Strictly journal entries as the author records daily the trials and tribulations of crossing the plains in ox pulled wagons. There is not much time for reflection, but the author does discuss the number of miles traveled each day, the constant search for water & grass for the oxen and encounters with Indians, traders and townspeople. Delightful comparisons of the price of flour, molasses, sugar and whiskey from traders versus the costs in " the States."
A good account of one man's experience of his travel to California in a wagon train. Since my great grandfather went to the gold fields in this manner about this same time, I found the information interesting. I have letters sent back while he was there but no information about his trip to get there.
